Diary of a Painting - Patrick Morrissey and Hanz Hancock

Diary of a Painting . ‘TQID’
This recent TQID series of paintings was a development from some original sequential drawings from the 1980s during the degree course at Goldsmiths College in London. The thinking behind these works then involved a process of studying the physical properties and material  characteristics of analogue film .  Its function as a form of communication, its potential for monumentality and its versatility are remarkable for something emanating from a seemingly mundane and purely mechanical source.

The lozenge shapes found in the series have been adapted from earlier single line paintings which later morphed from two dimensional painting back into several animated films, a sort of ‘full circle’ In its static form, the work is composed of a series of marks that are arranged numerically with a coded sequence which create rotations and curves which pulse on the picture plane. A typical sequence could be a ‘prepared’ Fibonacci for example which will often incorporate a deliberate intervention.
Music, Youtube videos played when working on or thinking about a piece of work in the small studio can vary widely, so we play a lot of ambient, mediaeval plainchant and Baroque organ music. Early punk music with bands like Wire who still produce brilliant music now and lots of early experimental German music like Faust. The mechanical taping and painting of the work is carried out in the large studio at Deptford and is always done in silence until the working day is over them we play music in the small studio and get back to planning new work.
After the preparation of the works surface, in this instance Jacksons deal boards, the drawing and taping and general preparation, we mix the first colour grey. Mars black, titanium white and bismuth vanadate yellow.
